Featured Artist Interview – Keith Garvey

Keith Garvey | Zenescope Cover Artist

Zenescope Entertainment: Your covers for us have been some of my favorite I’ve seen.  Have you done exclusive covers for other publishers, or was Zenescope your first venture into the comic industry?

Keith Garvey: I love doing covers for Zenescope. They are a new outlet for me and sort of a change from what I usually work on. I have done covers for a few novels and I did a lot of work for Kiss Comics before they went out of business.

ZE: The amount of Garv Girls I’ve seen is impressive.  How do you keep your ideas fresh while still having drawn a large amount of pinups?

KG: To be honest, it’s a struggle to come up with new pin-ups. Its seems like I’ve done every kind of position and style. But I love doing them, so I keep working on new ideas.

ZE: What’s your favorite golf course to play at?

KG: AAAH Yes. Golf! My other love. I play a lot of different courses, but I have to say ” Hickory Stick ” in Lewiston, NY is probably my favorite. It’s a pro style course (9 holes are standard and 9 holes are links style), a real challenge.

ZE: I can tell a cover is yours as soon as I see it.  Have you made an effort to stand out, or has your style come to you naturally?

KG: I think it’s just a natural thing. I learned how to do what I do without any real training as far as the digital stuff goes. So I think I do things differently from everyone else. It turns out my work looks different. I like that!

An upcoming cover of Keith’s for Grimm Fairy Tales.

ZE: What is your favorite sport to watch?

KG: I really love Football. Notre Dame and The Buffalo Bills. I’ll watch any football game, actually. I also love Golf and Hockey. So, pretty much all the major sports. I’m a big homer, so all the Buffalo teams are big in my house.

ZE: If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Thats sooo difficult. I love a lot of different music styles. The first thing that comes to mind is Ride The Lightning – Metallica. With a close second of The Chronic – Dr. Dre. No no, wait, how about David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, ahhh that’s too difficult.

ZE: What’s your favorite piece you’ve ever done and why?

KG: Again, that’s so hard to pick. The cover of my third book (Guilty Pleasures) is a piece called Aftermath. Its a woman in bed, laying on her stomach after sex. That one is probably my favorite. The mood and the lighting came out so well, and the look on her face was perfect.

ZE: Do you have any tips to anyone out there trying to make a living as a freelance artist?

KG: I get asked that a lot. I really don’t have any good advice. The only thing I can say is, work really hard on your craft. Get really good at it. Study what other artists have done in the past. Then, post it everywhere you can think of. Get your work where people can see it. If it’s good stuff, people will notice it and you will start to get work or offers. Try to be original in some way. That’s difficult to do with so much art out there, but try to look a little different or come at the ideas in a different way.

Keith’s exclusive cover for Grimm Fairy Tales: Tarot #2.

ZE: I saw you have skins for sale with Garv Girls on them…I have a few guitars with Elias Chatzoudis stickers on them, any chance of seeing guitar skins in the future?  I think pinups and guitars go pretty well together.

I do have some skins for Guitar Hero guitars. I don’t know. It’s a great idea. Maybe someone will want to take that idea on.

Elias is a great artist. I watched his art evolve into the amazing style he has now. A real pro.

ZE: Is there anything else you’d like to say to the fans?

KG: As long as I can remember, I wanted to be an artist. Not only an artist, but a pin-up artist. I was always told you could never make a living drawing sexy women. Well, I’m proof that it is possible. The people who appreciate the genre are the reason I can do what I do. I can’t thank them enough for the support they give me. Always positive feedback. Never judgmental. I was a fan of great pinups, and I’m not alone. They inspire me to keep creating!

Thanks! Keith
