Jason Metcalf | Cover Artist

ZE: How long have you been working in comics?
JM: I started collaborating with others over 15 years ago, but wasn’t involved in anything published until about 10 years ago, doing ink assists for Joe Weems on some Top Cow pages, most notably an issue of the Darkness set as a medieval fantasy over David Finch pencils. That owl in the tree was 100% my doing.

ZE: What age did you realize you wanted to be an artist as a career?
JM: I WANTED to since I was about 13 or 14, but couldn’t wrap my head around HOW to make that happen until I was almost 30.

ZE: What artist has most inspired you?
JM: It has to be Frank Frazetta.

ZE: What time period and where would you visit if you had a time machine? Why?
JM: The late 15th century, Florence, Milan, and Rome, Italy. I’d assist Leonardo Davinci.

ZE: What would the title of your autobiography be?
JM: The Persistent Protagonist

OZ Reign Witch Queen 2 - covercol
[Oz: Reign of the Witch Queen #2]

ZE: What would I find in your fridge right now?
JM: Lots of organic, non-dairy, gluten free stuff.

ZE: What is the best compliment you ever received?
JM: I like it when people look at my art, some character I’ve drawn, and say things like, “I don’t normally like (so and so character) but the way YOU draw them makes me want to be a fan.”

ZE: What is your favorite band of all time?
JM: U2.

ZE: What comic con do you most enjoy traveling to?
JM: New York Comic Con.

ZE: If you could switch places with someone for a week, who would it be? Why?
JM: Kim Jong-un. I’d free North Korea.

ZE: Who is your favorite comic book character of all time?
JM: The Bat Man.

ZE: You can choose any one super power. What is it? Why?
JM: Super Speed – c’mon, have you been watching the Flash? Think of the possibilities.

Zenescope to Celebrate 10th Anniversary at Wizard World Philadelphia

Ever since Ralph Tedesco and Joe Brusha, co-founders of Horsham-based Zenescope, attended their first convention at Wizard World Philly Con 2005, the company has done nothing but grow.

The company that had “only two measly comic books to display,” in Tedesco’s words, is now one of the top 10 comic book publishers in the world and has been for some time.

“It means a lot to celebrate our 10th year in our hometown,” Tedesco said. “Everything about Philly is special. It’s my hometown and I think most Philadelphians carry a lot of pride in their city.”

Tedesco said that it is a good feeling to have grown to be one of the top comic book publishers – and a bit surreal.

“It’s strange knowing where we came from and that we never set out to be comic book publishers prior to actually doing it,” he said. “We [Brusha and he] were writers and we needed a way to get our stories told. It seemed like the best way to do it was to do it ourselves.”

Besides hitting its 10th anniversary mark, Zenescope reached another milestone recently when its flagship title, “Grimm Fairy Tales,” achieved a feat few comics – let alone independents – ever reach with its 100th continuously published issue of that title.

“Hitting 100 issues is amazing, but it’s never been something where Joe or I stopped to smell the roses, so to speak,” Tedesco said. “I think our friends, family, and fans have been very supportive about that milestone, but Joe and I aren’t very good with taking praise sometimes, and I think we need to be reminded by our loved ones to sometimes take a moment and soak it in.”

Tedesco said that coming up with new characters and ideas for the company comes naturally.

“It’s all organic. It’s just a lot of brainstorming sessions and bouncing ideas off one another,” he said, adding that he’s happy with their unique spin on “Robyn Hood” and new series “Aliens vs. Zombies” and “Coven,” coming in July.

” ‘Aliens vs. Zombies’ is a series that Joe and I are writing and it’s as fun as it sounds,” Tedesco said. “We wanted to do something that was just fun and action-packed, and so we took two different genres and melded them together. The result is a mix of sci-fi, action, horror, and tongue-in-cheek humor.”

Most important, Tedesco says the possibility of at least one of the Zenescope properties becoming a film or TV show in the near future has a strong chance of becoming a reality.

“There is a big announcement coming soon that I wish I could tell you [all] about now… but it has to wait a few more weeks.”

In other words, Zenescope may just be getting warmed up.

[SNEAK PEEK at Mike’s upcoming Year 10 Photo Shoot cover at the end of the interview!]

ZE: How long have you been working in comics?
MD: Just started on my sixth year.

ZE: What age did you realize you wanted to be an artist as a career?
MD: Pretty young, but it was maybe around twelve-years-old or so when I started pursuing the idea seriously. I remember all my of guidance counselors were like, “What the f–k is a ‘Penciller’?”

ZE: Who has most inspired you in your art career?
MD: My kids. I credit my daughters for giving me the discipline needed to make the leaps that I have.

ZE: What artist has most inspired you?
MD: I’d have to say Kevin Eastman. His creation is what first got me into comics as a kid. And even with his level of success, Kevin still shows a deep respect and devotion to his army of fans.

ZE: What would the title of your autobiography be?
MD: Beautiful Disaster.

ZE: What actor would play you in a movie?
MD: Everyone already knows: Fabio.

ZE: What is the best compliment you ever received?
MD: A girl once told me that I draw the best boobs ever.

ZE: If you could only have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
MD: Pizza from any place named “Mario’s Pizza” in New York City.

ZE: Who’s your biggest celebrity crush?
MD: Oh, man… Right now I have it pretty bad for Nina Dobrev.

ZE: What is your favorite band of all time?
MD: I’d have to go with Metallica, and Pantera is a very close second.

ZE: Who is your favorite solo act of all time?
MD: Michael Jackson. No one else compares.

ZE: What Comic Con do you most enjoy traveling to?
MD: C2E2 because I really like Chicago. …When it’s not covered in snow, of course.

ZE: You can pick any 3 FAMOUS people to have dinner with, living or dead, who do you choose?
MD: Andrew Jackson, Robin Williams, and Axl Rose (if he decides to show up).

ZE: Do you workout? If so, what is your favorite workout routine?
MD: Girly push-ups.

ZE: What’s your favorite hobby outside of work?
MD: I like sleep. I miss sleep.

ZE: Who is your favorite comic book character of all time?
MD: Magneto because he’s so faithful to his cause. Technically he’s a villain, but he mostly wants what’s best for his species. Considering his childhood and what humans did to his family, it’s hard to argue with the guy. Plus, he has the best power ever conceived.

ZE: who is your favorite Zenescope comic book character to draw or color?
MD: I still have a soft spot for Cinderella.

GFT47A

ZE: You can choose any one super power. What is it? Why?
MD: I’d have Magneto’s powers because there’s virtually no limits to what you can do with that. Even do like Magneto and create a little magnetic force around myself and fly through outer space. Build a nice little home on an asteroid.

Sabine Rich | Cover Artist/Colorist
[SNEAK PEEK at Sabine’s upcoming Realm War #10 cover at the end of the interview!]

ZE: How long have you been working in comics?
SR: Started in 2012 so it’s been 3 years.

ZE: What age did you realize you wanted to be an artist as a career?
SR: 14 years old.

ZE:Who has most inspired you in your art career?
SR: Truthfully I fell in love with art from watching cartoons, so I have to say Disney cartoons have inspired me the most. I didn’t really grow up with comic books, but I was fascinated by how art was animated and how you could bring something to life with art. So it definitely made me fall in love with art.

ZE: What artist has most inspired you?
SR: I wish I had one… but truthfully there have been too many and there are more artists everywhere and the art I see every day throughout my life that have inspired me to keep wanting to draw more and get better and also make me keep falling in love with this form of creating.

ZE: What would I find in your fridge right now?
SR: Milk, orange juice, kombucha, pate, cheese, butter, carrots, zucchini, broccoli, pumpkin, mushrooms, eggs, pickles, condiments, peanut butter, thai curry paste, and some leftovers.

ZE: What’s your favorite movie all time if you had to pick one?
SR: That’s really hard to pick one for all time! But I will go with Pirates of the Caribean, as that always makes me happy when I watch it. Yo ho and a bottle of rum! :D

ZE: What actor would play you in a movie?
SR: I’d go with Eva Green. She’s French :) and is the same age as me and I’ve been told I look a lot like her. Of course, only drawback is she is quite a bit taller than me… but I guess you can’t have everything :P

ZE: What’s your craziest convention story?
SR: Well it’s not that crazy but only my second time at a convention I completely lost my voice by the first day and had to do a 3 day show with no voice, and it took me a whole week to get my voice back after that. Definitely don’t want that to happen again.  Everyone was very nice to me while I was trying to explain the books we were selling without a voice… was pretty funny at times.

ZE: If you could only have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
SR: Man that is soo hard to pick, but I do really like Thai curry, green, red, and yellow. So I’ll go with that.

ZE: Who’s your biggest celebrity crush?
SR: Right now I do have a bit of a  crush on the actor, Travis Fimmel, who plays Ragnar Lothbrok in Vikings. I’m so enjoying that series!

ZE: What Comic Con do you most enjoy traveling to?
SR: I do really like NYCC. It’s a long show and usually really exhausting, but it’s got great energy and plenty of amazing artists that it’s always great to go and admire as well. The city is also very interesting to visit and being a European I feel more at home in a city where you can walk and take public transport and get around easily.

ZE: Do you workout? If so, what is your favorite workout routine?
SR: My workout routine is that every time I get up from my desk throughout the day, for whatever reason. I do some form of exercise. I have a kettlebell so I do squats and arm exercises and I generally try and combine an exercise to work out as many parts of the body in one go. So I do that throughout the day. Keeps my body active throughout the day which I read is important for someone who has a desk job.

ZE: What’s your favorite hobby outside of work?
SR: Sports… though it’s always hard to find the time… but it really is something that makes me super happy when I can be outside doing something sporty!

ZE: Who is your favorite Zenescope comic book character to draw or color?
SR: So far I really like drawing and coloring the White Queen.

WhiteQueen_AOD_02_cover B
[White Queen #2 – Cover B by Sabine]

ZE: You can choose any one super power. What is it? Why?
SR: I would like to control time… :) and have the ability to travel back and forth. The reason is there never seems to be enough time… and there are always those moments one wishes they could relive. Anyway I think it would be pretty cool :)

[SNEAK PEEK at some upcoming coolness at the end of the interview!]

ZE: How long have you been working in comics?
RI: I started three years ago for Italian comics and since the last November for American comics.

ZE: What age did you realize you wanted to be an artist as a career?
RI: Since I was a child. I was born thinking “I’m gonna be an artist… or a paratrooper.” Well, I think the second choice would be easier than make comics.

ZE: Who has most inspired you in your art career?
RI: Even if he doesn’t know, the answer is David Messina. Many years ago I met him during an Italian convention, Lucca Comics. When he talked to me, I realized that I want to be apart this world with the same approach he has. That moment, I knew I would have to be polite, professional, and modest, exactly as he is. I would work hard and, if I had the possibility, help young talent to find their way.

ZE: What artist has most inspired you?
RI: I follow so many artists that it’s hard to do a list. But, if I should give you one name, I’d say Claire Wendling. I love her art; she’s a great source of inspiration

ZE: Have you ever had a mentor? If so, Who?
RI: I don’t know if I could call him a mentor, but Alfio Buscaglia (Glénat Editions – Sergio Bonelli Editore) was the first one to help me when I bought my Cintiq. And, most of all, he was the first to help me when I was panicked. Every Saturday I went to his study to have a cup of tea with him and his dog Zoe. Those were perfect times. I remember it was raining aaaaall the time.

I should say thanks to Michael Woods too. He was my first foreign contact, and it was Alfio who recommended me to him. Michael is great, he had the patience to explain to me how to work for American comics… and he even gave me my first American work!

ZE: What time period and where would you visit if you had a time machine? Why?
RI: There’s a part of me who wants to travel back in time in the Louis XIV’s age. I love Versaille, and I wish I could follow the etiquette of that great court, with all those magnificent dresses. But, also, there’s a part of me who’d like to fight shoulder to shoulder with Che Guevara, in Bolivia, spending my life to fight for human freedom. Another part of me would visit Great Britain, to fight with the suffragettes for the women emancipation.

ZE: What would the title of your autobiography be?
RI: History of a Girl Dead in Poverty. She bought more comics than she drew.

ZE: What would I find in your fridge right now?
RI: Sushi! Or, to say it better: SUSHI!

ZE: What’s your favorite movie all time if you had to pick one?
RI: The Bryan Singer’s “The Usual Suspects”. Because anybody can understand the movie until the end. And he who says he did, is lying.

ZE: What actor would play you in a movie?
RI: Laura Carmichael. I love her in Downtown Abbey.

ZE: What’s your craziest convention story?
RI: Every time that anyone hugs me and kisses me and talks to me… and I really, really don’t know who he is.

ZE: If you could sing one song on the Voice, what would it be and Why?
RI: Oh, no, please… do not let me sing. Never. For your safety.

ZE: What is the best compliment you ever received?
RI: “You’re a rock.”

ZE: If you could only have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
RI: Nutella. But the truth is that I have a food intolerance to Nutella, so… problem solved!

ZE: Who’s your biggest celebrity crush?
RI: Maggie Smith.

ZE: What is your favorite band of all time?
RI: Queen.

ZE: Who is your favorite solo act of all time?
RI: Elvis Presley.
