Oz And Zenescope: The Perfect Match

*This article was written by a guest blogger

Myst, Neverland, Wonderland and Oz.

Ever since Grimm Fairy Tales transformed from a anthology style book into the flagship title of the Grimm Universe, we have heard about these four realms. Four realms of power that are inexorably linked to Earth and have shaped it’s inhabitants for generations. Up until now readers have experienced the worlds of Myst, Wonderland and Neverland in various miniseries and regular series with characters meeting, living and dying right before our eyes. But Oz has always been behind a curtain, talked about and glimpsed sparingly since we all got our first look at the final realm in the conclusion of The Dream Eater Saga back in 2011.

This year, that all changes.

July will see the launch of Oz, a new series written by Zenescope President Joe Brusha that will fling open the doors and put the spotlight firmly on Dorothy, the Wicked Witch and, yes, flying monkeys. The Zenescope faithful will finally learn all about the fourth realm of power and how it fits in with the rest of the ever expanding Grimm Universe.

And if ever a concept was perfect for the type of stories Zenescope likes to tell, it’s Oz.

Oz has all the elements that make for a great Zenescope series. You have the beautiful yet tough as nails heroine in Dorothy, the tailor-made for Zenescope villain in the Wicked Witch and easily one of the best and most original supporting casts in literature in the Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman and the rest.

And did I mention the flying monkeys?

If you need further proof, just look what Zenescope did with Wonderland. If you ever read the original story by Lewis Carroll, then you know there was already a wealth of material and story ideas there to play with, but what Raven Gregory managed to do is something else entirely. He took the story of Alice and turned it into a generational saga of one family’s war against the realm of madness. Look at his Cheshire Cat or the Jabberwocky, do they seem like anything Lewis Carroll might have had in mind when he wrote Alice in Wonderland? No, instead they were transformed into some of the scariest and most entertaining characters in the Grimm Universe.

WONDER010_cover A

Now just imagine what Joe Brusha and the rest of the warped minds at Zenescope could do with something like Oz. The directions they could go in are practically endless. I’m getting dizzy just thinking about the variant cover possibilities alone. Imagine what Anthony Spay or Jamie Tyndall will come up with with that cast of characters, it boggles the mind.

So when we all finally get to see Oz this July, get ready to be amazed. If could be one of the best pairings in the history of comics: Zenescope and Oz, a match made in heaven.

Zenescope Follows Alice and Calie Down the Rabbit Hole for new Trilogy

Press Release

Zenescope Follows Alice and Calie Down the Rabbit Hole for new Trilogy

Feb, 2013 — Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans for a new Wonderland prequel mini-series entitled Wonderland: Down the Rabbit Hole. The new five issue series will be penned by Wonderland writer and co-creator Raven Gregory and Zenescope’s “Robyn Hood” scribe, Pat Shand.

This new series takes readers back to the original mini-series, RETURN TO WONDERLAND, which was first published in 2007.  Zenescope’s “Down the Rabbit Hole” will fill in the blanks surrounding Calie’s first journey into the realm of madness.  This time, readers will see things from other family members’ perspectives as Calie takes her first, life-altering, journey into Wonderland.

As was announced in July 2012, Zenescope’s original Wonderland trilogy was purchased by Lionsgate TV and is being produced by Smallville’s Brian Robbins to be adapted as a live-action television series.  This new mini-series will no doubt allow for additional story-lines and appease the die-hard Wonderland fans who can now delve deeper into the rich mythology that creators Joe Brusha, Ralph Tedesco and Raven Gregory have been publishing for the past six years.

Wonderland: Down the Rabbit Hole will be available for preorder on the March edition of Diamond Previews or for preorder through Zenescope’s official web store: http://zenescope.pinnaclecart.com.

Wonderland #1 is Zenescope’s Best-Selling Comic Ever

Zenescope Entertainment, the company known most for its take on horror and supernatural thrillers, has announced that the #1 issue of its new Wonderland ongoing series has become the best-selling comic in the company’s seven year history.

The original Wonderland trilogy (Return to Wonderland, Beyond Wonderland, Escape From Wonderland) had been Zenescope’s most popular series to date. Now the Wonderland ongoing series continues that tradition with record sales that have surpassed expectations. The ongoing series picks up years after protagonist Calie Liddle escaped the horrors of the realm of madness called Wonderland.  Calie’s been living in obscurity with her now teenage daughter, Violet, as they try to hide from their past.  But they know deep down that Wonderland never lets one go and Calie realizes that soon she will need to fight back again.

Wonderland #1 was our best-selling comic ever and it’s a testament to the creative teams behind the entire Wonderland series since it began in ’07.” said Zenescope’s Editor-in-Chief, Ralph Tedesco “Our fans have supported this series for over five years now and we’re so appreciative of their support.”

This news comes just after Zenescope Entertainment announced that Lionsgate Studios picked up the rights to Zenescope’s Wonderland to produce for Television.  Brian Robbins (Smallville) will serve as an executive producer on the project while Zenescope’s Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco will co-executive produce.

Not only is Wonderland selling at a rapid pace in stores but Wonderland #1 is also seeing significant success through digital download.  The issue is one of the company’s fastest-selling digital releases through digital distributor ComiXology and was one of Comixology’s top-selling digital comics for the month of July.

Meanwhile, Zenescope Entertainment continues to grow its Wonderland product line by recently releasing its first ever action figures with CS Moore Studios as well as a Wonderland board game through board game developer 5th Planet Games.

Wonderland #1 is currently available digitally through ComiXology and can also be ordered directly on Zenescope’s website. Go to www.zenescope.com and Facebook page www.facebook.com/Zenescope for more information.

Here’s a preview of the interiors of Wonderland #1

A Convo with: Dawn McTeigue

Hey fans!

We wanted to give you a look into the 2012 Wonderland Annual. We chat with one of the interior artists.

A Convo with Dawn McTeigue – (credited as Dawn Schwartz in the 2012 Wonderland Annual)

What was the first book you worked on?

JP Roth’s Ancient Dreams Teaser. Drawn in early 2011. I’m new to the industry.

How critical are you of your own work?

VERY! Probably a bit too critical, but it keeps me hungry for improvement & eager to hear people’s critiques of my work so that I can get faster & better.

It was good having you at the SDCC booth. What do you like/dislike about conventions?

I like so much about conventions, but one of the stand-out things is that I get to meet more people in the comic industry. I have so much comic art that I love, and so many artists that I admire, it’s really awesome to be able to talk with them & learn what I can. Also being able to meet the fans of the comic books that I’ve worked on & hear what they have to say about the comic & art is a special treat all its own. As far as what I dislike about conventions: having really sore feet! :-)

How did you go about tackling the Wonderland art style?

I took a long time studying & reading all the previous Wonderland comics. I also really tried to get into Alice & Calie’s headspace to understand everything that they’re going through, what makes them tick & snap respectively & from that, create pages that were in keeping with not only previous artwork, but the girls themselves. I had a ton of fun working on the pages that I did in this issue. I hope the Wonderland fans enjoy them too.

Thank you so much for your time Dawn and your work on the Wonderland Annual.

We’re going to continue to chat with a number of our artists/writers that work on our comics and we’ll bring you those interviews here on the blog.

The superstar team of artists include:

Robert Gill, Daniel Leister, Sheldon Goh, Martin Montiel, and Vic Drujiniu!

Now, let us see some of the amazing art that came from these talented artists.

Page two was handle by Vic Drujiniu, and his handling of the young Alice is as solid as anyone’s.

Here’s the series’ current artist Robert Gill handling the appearance of the Queen of Spades.

The next page we preview is from Sheldon Goh. He handles some awesome brutality on this page.

And here is a bad ass  two page spread from Daniel Leister. That army is looking quite foreboding…

We end with a page from Martin Montiel, where we see the Queen of Spades getting the attention of the other major players in Wonderland.

So, excited? I can’t imagine how you couldn’t be. This single issue had an all-star team for its interiors and it really shows. Writer Raven Gregory really wanted this issue to be special as we are coming up on our five year anniversary of our Wonderland series. Look for it to release in stores on April 25th!
