Little Mermaid Creative Team Speaks Part 2! New Interior Pages and Cover!

LM_OrderFormGrimm Fairy Tales: The Little Mermaid (releasing 2/25) features the creative team of writer Meredith Finch (Wonder Woman, Grimm Tales of Terror, Tales from Oz), artist Miguel Mendonca (Warlord of OZ, Tales from OZ, OZ), and colorist Ivan Nunes (Grimm Fairy Tales, Game of Thrones, Green Hornet). Cover artists include David Finch, Ed Benes, Jason Metcalf, Mirka Andolfo, and Mike Krome.
Having first appeared in Grimm Fairy Tales: Myths and Legends, Zenescope’s Little Mermaid, Erica, embarks on a brand new journey.

Even t008-9 Little Mermaid 1 Colorshough issue #1 is still in production, what has been your favorite panel to color?
Ivan Nunes: Yes, we are still at the beginning, but my favorite so far is the page 8 with Erica in her siren/monster form destroying the octopuses. I personally found that this panel became great.

This is your second miniseries with Zenescope. Do you find yourself approaching it differently from your first, Warlord of Oz?
Miguel Mendonca: I do. Each story has its own feeling and I try to represent that on the way that world is drawn. I’ll be happy if the reader can get a sense of two very different worlds just by looking at the pages when comparing Warlord of Oz with The Little Mermaid.

Do you have a favorite rendition of the Little Mermaid? What made it memorable for you?
Ivan Nunes: I would say…sirens in general. They are memorable because they are mythological creatures that unite the two extremes. On the one side all the beauty and sensuality, and the other a monster without the slightest compassion as they hunt their prey.

How were you first introduced to the story of the Little Mermaid? Will you include any elements from that, and what do you intend to bring that will make it stand out from other retellings?
Miguel Mendonca: I grew up with Disney movies and cartoons. The Lion King and Aladdin are among some of my favorite animations ever (along with a bunch of Anime/manga movies). For the Little Mermaid my first contact was with the cartoon series, I clearly remember watching it every Saturday morning as a kid. I do try to include elements from that on the boards, part of it comes naturally, but I also think it’s important that people can recognize something from the characters that they already knew. As for standing out from other retellings, I’m not that worried that it doesn’t since, the way Meredith Finch is writing it, right from the beginning you understand this is not your regular Little Mermaid story. Of course, I always try to give it my personal touch, and that in itself I’m hoping stands out

Even though this is building upon Zenescope’s previous Little Mermaid issues, this is considered a launch title. How would you describe this miniseries to new readers?
Meredith Finch: This is a story that really gives the reader a lot of insight into who Zenescope’s Little Mermaid is, including her parentage and we get to explore, in a new way, the idea of mermaid/human interaction and attraction. The ultimate outcome is something very different from what readers have come to expect, given the well-known … version(s). In addition to some great artwork, fans can look forward to seeing some old favorites like the Sea Witch stirring up the proverbial pot and we are also integrating this story more into the Zenescope universe.

Ten Years of Zenescope Entertainment

b98f12f0-b3eb-4ff7-a99d-94214d038505

HORSHAM, PA December 2014—Zenescope Entertainment begins celebrating their Year10 milestone in 2015 by releasing 10 issues per month. With a mix of the ongoing and brand new, these releases contain the hottest and most sought after stories in the Grimm Universe!

“Ten issues per month is the perfect way to celebrate our ten year anniversary. It keeps the amount of issues manageable for fans and allows us to really focus on the quality of our titles”, states Zenescope Co-Creator and President, Joe Brusha

Zenescope’s Year10 releases feature the ever-popular GRIMM FAIRY TALES, ROBYN HOOD, REALM WAR, GRIMM TALES OF TERROR, AND WONDERLAND.  These on-going titles will be joined by modern mini-series including THE LITTLE MERMAID and THE WHITE QUEEN plus the 3rd installments of OZ and THE JUNGLE BOOK.

Zenescope’s Year10 event highlights graphic novels and collections including the WARLORD OF OZ and GRIMM TALES OF TERROR hardcovers, a ROBYN HOOD omnibus, and the much-anticipated GRIMM FAIRY TALES SOURCE BOOK.

Included in Zenescope’s Year10 is the release of 10 celebratory rare and exclusive variant covers by some of Zenescope’s top artists. These exclusives will be available to retailers and on the Zenescope Year10 convention tour.

“We believe in what we’re doing as a company. We know that we have a foothold in the industry and a strong brand that keeps growing. We have a few surprises up our sleeves for 2015 and beyond.” – Zenescope Co-Creator and Editor-in-Chief, Ralph Tedesco

ZENESCOPE CREATORS SPEAK ON… GRIMM TALES OF TERROR #1

The cut-off for pre-order dates for July releases is quickly approaching, and the creative team behind Zenescope Entertainment’s GRIMM TALES OF TERROR #1, which marks the company’s return to the horror anthology format that put us on the map, has a message for readers and retailers!
“GRIMM FAIRY TALES and WONDERLAND, and of course our SE7EN prequel back in 2006 were all definitely spawned from horror. This brings those elements back into the forefront a little more than they have been. With Grimm Tales of Terror, we’re blending horror with some dark humor and delving into urban legends, classic horror stories from Poe, and even original stories. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

– Ralph Tedesco, writer and co-creator

“Fans of our original GFT issues, Tales from the Crypt, and Twilight Zone will feel right at home with Tales of Terror. It features retellings of classic and beloved stories, and also some new ones that will prove just as tantilizing. And then you have the deeply moody art of Antonio Bifulco that is sure to thrill and terrify. This is really a series no horror fan should miss.”

– Nicole Glade, editor

ZENESCOPE CREATORS SPEAK ON… GFT vs. Wonderland #1!

The cut-off for pre-order dates for July releases is quickly approaching, and the creative team behind Zenescope Entertainment’s highly anticipated GFT vs. WONDERLAND #1 has a message for readers and retailers!

“For years, Zenescope readers have had the chance to follow Sela Mathers in Grimm Fairy Tales and beyond as she’s battled alongside and against the likes of Robyn Hood, Hesling, Red Riding Hood, and many, many more. The readers have followed Calie as she struggled to save her daughter, her sanity, and her life across two worlds in various Wonderland books. But the readers have never gotten to see Sela and Calie together. That’s what makes GFT vs. Wonderland special. You have two great characters at the peak of their powers crossing paths. Will they be friends? Will they be bitter enemies? And what on Earth or Wonderland could possibly threaten them both? It’s an event, and you should be there.”

– Troy Brownfield, writer

“When I read Troy’s script, I envision Sela and Calie two strong warriors that are determined, beautiful, and independent. It’s like having two Wonder Womans in one book!”

– Luca Claretti, artist

JOE BRUSHA SPEAKS ON… Grimm Fairy Tales #100

The cut-off for pre-order dates for July releases is quickly approaching, and Joe Brusha, Zenescope co-founder and writer of GRIMM FAIRY TALES #100, has a message for readers and retailers!

“It’s hard for me to believe we are getting ready to publish our 100th issue of Grimm Fairy Tales. It seems like not that long ago we publishing issue #1 and then trying to figure out how we were going to find enough fairy tales to make it to issue #25. It’s been a blast writing and planning the series and seeing how it has evolved over the last eight years. As excited as I am to be publishing issue #100, I’m even more excited for the direction the series is going to take in #101. It’s going to be a great jumping on point for new readers and I think current fans are going to love it even more. The best way to describe I can describe it is Harry Potter meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

ZENESCOPE CREATORS SPEAK… on Realm War #1

The cut-off for pre-order dates for July releases is quickly approaching, and the creative team behind Zenescope Entertainment’s climatic REALM WAR #1 has a message for readers and retailers!

“This is a series that fans can’t afford to miss. Not only is it the culmination of the Age of Darkness storyline, but the fate of all the characters in the Grimm Universe is at stake and no one is safe. There will be a lot of twists and turns before the end and not everyone is going to survive the series. It’s going to be an exciting and surprising ride.”

– Joe Brusha, writer and co-creator

“Realm War is a must read for fans who’ve been enjoying all of the Age of Darkness releases. Grimm 100 ends on such a great cliffhanger, you’ll definitely want to know where it goes from there and how the Age of Darkness story will end!”

CREATORS SPEAK… on GFT #100!

The cut-off for pre-order dates for July releases is quickly approaching, and the creative team behind Zenescope Entertainment’s GRIMM FAIRY TALES #100 has a message for readers and retailers!

“The fact that we’ve hit an issue #100 is such a great feeling and it proves that we have a dedicated and loyal fan base. We’re looking forward to really blowing readers away with both the artwork and story.”

– Ralph Tedesco, co-writer and co-creator

“If you are a current reader of Zenescope’s Grimm Universe books – Grimm Fairy Tales, OZ, Wonderland, Robyn Hood, etc. – then this book is absolutely a must read, it is going have a major impact on the Grimm Universe.  If you have never picked up an issue of Grimm Fairy Tales, give it a try!  I’m confident you will enjoy it.   From a personal perspective, after doing strictly covers for over two years, I’m extremely excited to be back on interiors for this issue, and I think that shows through in the final product. Grimm Fairy Tales #100 is loaded with non-stop action and colorful characters, really highlighting the epic nature of the Grimm universe, and I couldn’t be happier with how it has come out.  Ivan Nunes is doing amazing things with the colors. We’re celebrating the 100th issue of Grimm Fairy Tales in style, so preorder now and don’t miss out!”
